Presskit: TRAILS

Description

TRAILS is a cozy puzzle game in which players guide sandships across a crumbling desert to reach isolated outposts.

Players draw lines on a grid in order to plot the movement of ships that cannot selfintersect or visit a tile twice. When done drawing they can start the simulation and see the outcome their routs produced. If the ships reach their goal without collision and while satisfying all victory conditions they win and advance to the next level. Over the course of the game more and more interacting mechanics get added to the game, requiring players to supply outposts with vital cargo, unlock new passages, juggle items, avoid hostile drones and support allied ships.

Features

  • more than 70 unique levels
  • increasing amounts of interacting mechanics such as outposts, resources, hazards, hostile Drones, friendly NPCs and ship upgrades
  • formidable optional challenges
  • translations to 11 languages, including the conlang Toki Pona

Press & Reviews

While Trails starts easy, it doesn’t stay that way. I was impressed by the game’s gentle yet firm difficulty curve. Though it introduces mechanics one at a time, it starts combining them in devilishly tricky ways.

david.reviews: Trails blazes a path through a puzzle-filled desert

I’ve enjoyed my time with Trails so far. Developer PurpleSloth gradually teaches you how to play through trial and error, and it adds new hazards and mechanics at a nice pace, though the puzzles do become quite tricky.

engadget: Playdate Season Two, Spray Paint Simulator and other new indie games worth checking out

It’s that gradual difficulty curve that speaks to the strength of Trails’ design; I never felt that I was looking at a puzzle I couldn’t solve, I just couldn’t see the answer right away.

For puzzle fans worried their grey matter won’t get enough of a test, Trails has several tougher side levels you unlock as you progress along the main path.
